Waymo test vehicles are requiring less human intervention, Calif. DMV says. Waymo’s self-driving test vehicles are relying less on humans and are miles ahead of the pack when in comes to driver takeover rates, requiring a human take the wheel about 1,000 times less frequently than some competitors. On Wednesday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles released its second annual summary of autonomous vehicle driver disengagement reports -- defined as situations where a human must intervene while the car is in driverless mode. Waymo, the stand-alone self-driving technology company spun out from Google, reported a decrease in the rate of driver takeovers from 0.0008 per mile driven in 2015 to 0.0002 in 2016.

WASHINGTON -- The EPA has accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles of failing to disclose software in 104,000 diesel pickups and SUVs that allows them to exceed pollution limits. The EPA stopped short of calling the software in 2014-16 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500s a “defeat device” but said the carmaker failed to disclose its use. Fiat Chrysler said it meets all applicable regulatory requirements and will work with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration to contest the allegations. The EPA and California Air Resources Board told the automaker they believe its auxiliary emissions control software allowed vehicles to generate excess pollution in violation of the law.
